Overview
Meru has one route to the top and can be attempted for three days but we highly recommend doing for four days for acclimatization. Most alpines uses Meru for acclimatization before the Kilimanjaro climb. The mountain has less snow formed at the volcano eruption. Unlike Kilimanjaro when you are climbing the Mount Meru you have to be escorted by an armed ranger(s) as you pass through the Arusha National Park.
Highlights
- Mount Meru has a single official route to the summit (Momella Route), which can be completed in three days, though a four-day itinerary is highly recommended for better acclimatization and a more enjoyable pace.
- Many climbers use Meru as an acclimatization hike before tackling Mount Kilimanjaro, due to its high elevation and less strenuous ascent profile.
- Unlike Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru is located inside Arusha National Park, which means climbers are required to be accompanied by armed park rangers. This is for safety, as the trail passes through areas inhabited by wildlife such as buffalo, giraffes, and elephants.
- The mountain was formed by volcanic activity and has less snow and ice compared to Kilimanjaro, making the trek more accessible in all seasons.
- The climb offers diverse scenery—from lush montane forests and open grasslands to rocky alpine terrain, with panoramic views and chances to spot wildlife along the way.
- On summit day, climbers begin the final push at midnight and reach Socialist Peak (4,566m) at sunrise, often with clear views of Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance.
